More than a Half-century ago, the first civilian flying Saucer was brought to national attention by a scientific crew of government and military scientists. On the evening of January 14, 1947 a blue-white glowing UFO was seen hovering above a California farm. The next day, the flying disk was sighted over multiple locations, including the Willowbrook State Sanitarium, run by an order of nuns. The crew members, Doctor Ruppelt and Dr. Hynek, were forbidden to write their story until the Army had finished a top-secret military project called Project Sign.
A little after midnight on March 14, 1947, a pilot flying on a routine night test flight spotted a glowing object in the skies of Abilene, Texas. He turned his plane toward the object and soon encountered the craft, which he described as “unbelievably large.” The craft was moving quickly, and he landed safely in a nearby field.
The pilot spoke briefly with a small group of farmers who were observing the lights. Their conversation included the following exchange:
Q. Would you call that ship, a spaceship?
A. No sir, I don’t think it is. It’s too large and round.
Q. Where did you see it?
A. On a wheat field about three miles southwest of here, between two and three miles in the air.
Q. Did you get a good look at it?
A. Yes sir. The craft appeared to be made of light, a clear light like that of the moon, but more steady. It was about two or three hundred feet in diameter and moving very fast.
Q. How fast?
A. So fast I couldn’t follow it in my plane, but it took less than thirty seconds to get from east to west.
The following morning, a farmer driving along the same road noticed a deep furrow that had been gouged in the dirt by the UFO’s landing. Later that day, more farmers discovered the mark and the gouge. The witnesses told reporter Ed Downs that the object appeared to be “two or three times the size of a football field.”
One of the witnesses was Bill Randleman, the owner of a large farm just south of the Texas-Oklahoma border. Randleman was awakened around 4:00 am by the commotion outside. As he walked out of his house, he saw
